Medicaid and PPACA
A recent ruling from the Obama Administration has delayed implementing a key provision of the PPACA. This provision would require all employers with 50 or more employees to provide health insurance. This provision was scheduled to be implemented in 2014. It has now been delayed to 2015.
As a result of this ruling, the Florida legislature seems unlikely to convene a special session to discuss Medicaid expansion. Many legislators see the delay as proof that the funding to support the PPACA is not available. These legislators are concerned that Florida will have to subsidize significant portions of any Medicaid Expansion and many are reluctant to place the state at risk.
Proponents of the PPACA disagree and are supporting Medicaid expansion citing increased access to care in the long run will reduce health care costs to the state, and will add thousands
of new jobs to our economy. They also state that businesses may be less likely to locate to Florida because of poor access to health care for their lower wage employees.
