The House Select Committee on Health Care Workforce Innovation proposed a committee bill (the draft was released yesterday) that recommends amending the Nurse Practice Act (s. 464.003, F.S.).  Some of the changes outlined in the bill include, but not limited to: redefining the ARNP title to APRN (Advanced Practice Register Nurse); introduction of language redefining "health care practitioner" and "psychotherapist"; Baker Act and DEA authority.  Additionally it defines the criteria for applying for independent practice (IAPRN) as requiring the APRN be nationally certified with 3 years of post-masters supervised experience and a graduate level course in pharmacology. The bill is 155 pages and includes specific language that needs close examination.  Your help and input are needed.  Please review the bill by Clicking Here OR

The Committee has scheduled a Workshop on Monday, February 10 from 3:30 to 6:30 pm located at Morris Hall (17HOB at the Florida Capitol) to discuss the language of this proposed Committee Bill.

ACTION NEEDED:

  1. Read the bill language and offer comments.  Get into "study groups".  Divide the 155 pages prn, try to understand the bill, and ask questions.  This language may potentially govern the APRN practice. As soon as possible, offer feedback regarding your concerns about the bill to your professional organizations' political action liaison or the Coalition Rapid Response team.

  2. People are needed to attend the Monday Committee Workshop (2/10/2014). If you unable to attend Monday's Committee Workshop, please send your comments to the legislative liaison(s) of your professional organizations or a Coalition team member.

This is an exciting time for APRNs. The momentum for change is present.  The time for all APRNs to join together in offering ONE VOICE in support of improving patient access to care by removing barriers to APRN practice is NOW
