Studies prove effectiveness of nurse practitioners

A local physician has once again not done his homework. Dr. Jon Ward’s Dec. 23 column, “If nurses want to practice medicine, train them as doctors,” is full of untruths.
According to a recent report by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, almost 600 million patient visits are made to nurse practitioners each year. Nurse practitioners are different from other providers because we focus on the whole person, which includes the families and their communities, and not just their disease.
A report called the “Quality of Nurse Practitioner Practice” (2010) is a summary of research studies comparing nurse practitioners to medical doctors. In the report from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, there is a summary of important research reports which supports the nurse practitioner.
Of interesting note is that the majority of research reports is not from a nursing journal or nursing association, but rather from the Archives of Internal Medicine, Congressional Budget Office, Medical Decision Making journal, British Medical Journal, Yale Journal of Regulation, New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
