Rep. Campbell RN / Senator Siplin File Baker Act Bill
|
Representative Daphne Campbell RN filed HB 1157 to recognize ARNPs among the professionals who may involuntarily commit a patient under the Baker Act.
Senator Gary Siplin filed the companion senate version of the bill. This bill will give authority to ARNPs to protect the lives of their patients and the public when a patient is no longer able to protect their own life or places the life of another in danger.
As soon as the bill is assigned to committee, we will contact you and ask that you start calling and emailing the committee chair and members for the bill to be placed on agenda and supported.

Senator Bennett and Representative Van Zant file a controlled substance bill
|
Senator Bennett and Representative Van Zant filed a controlled substance bill that will add the title ARNP to current DEA language and allow ARNPs to obtain a DEA number. We will send more information as it becomes available. Senator Bennett has championed this bill for the past several years. We also welcome the assistance of Representative Van Zant on this issue and hope that a compromise can be found.

FMA, Senator Alan Hays and Controlled Substance Prescribing
|
This past year a CAP-PAC board member spoke to her state senator, Senator Alan Hays, about controlled substance prescribing for ARNPs. Senator Hays is a dentist and supports a compromise approach to the issue. He has a strong working relationship with the Florida Medical Association (FMA). Senator Hays agreed to speak to the FMA to discuss a possible solution to the 18 year stand off. He arranged for a meeting with key leaders at the FMA and a dialogue about the issue began. A sincere effort to reach a compromise on a possible bill for this session took place with several meetings and some progress. However, we were unable to reach a consensus by filing deadlines.
Senator Hays has a solid working relationship with the FMA and also serves as a missionary providing dental care over seas to underserved areas.
He is a strong advocate for improving health care access. We look forward to continuing work on this effort with his assistance a wish to publically thank him for his hard efforts on behalf of patients in Florida.

All State Legislators up for Re-election in 2012.

Every 10 years the federal and state legislatures are required to redraw legislative districts according to new census figures; and every 10 years each member of the state house and senate are up for re-election all in the same year. For this reason the Florida Legislature convenes earlier then usual in order to attend to the business of re-districting and then the business of electioneering. Monda,y January 9th is the start of the 2012 Legislative Session!
